Microsoft has just introduced its flagship laptop, the Surface Laptop Ultra, with Nvidia’s RTX Spark silicon inside. The sleek laptop, which arrives as a spiritual successor to the Surface Laptop, is the company’s most powerful laptop and is directly targeted at users who require extreme workloads.
The laptop comes equipped with a 15-inch miniLED touch-sensitive display and a metallic chassis that is just 18 millimeters thick and tips the scales at under two 4.5 pounds. Notably, it also supports magnetic charging via the USB-C port, which is a neat addition. The star of the show, of course, is the Nvidia silicon at its heart.
It lands Nvidia’s RTX Spark processor that comes with an RTX graphics engine ticking alongside it, married to the biggest thermal architecture (2.5x bigger) Microsoft has ever shipped within a laptop. The company notes that the Surface Laptop Ultra maintains nearly 99% of its peak power while on battery, which is a huge lift.
Since this is a machine targeted at AI professionals, the company is touting the one petaflop of AI compute on the machine. The device also gets a replaceable and user-serviceable SSD drive, while the memory options go all the way up to 128GB. Compared to a MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip, Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Ultra is 2.1x faster at first token generation, 4.3x faster at image generation, and 6.2x snappier at image generation.
It comes in two color options — silver and dark grey — and is now up for pre-orders. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2599 and it goes straight against Apple’s MacBook Pro. To go with it, the company has also announced that the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box will be shipping with a sticker price of $5,999 attached to it.
